Android reworking of a classic 80s platform game
Giana Sisters is an Android version of the popular Commodore 64 platform game of the same name.
The original Giana Sisters was heavily inspired by Super Mario Bros, and this Android reworking is no different. You need to bash blocks to collect diamonds, jump on monsters' heads, bounce from platform to platform, and disappear down holes and tunnels. You can power up into a different Giana Sister, just like Mario changes into Super Mario.
Despite its heavy Mario influence, Giana Sisters manages to create a charm all of its own. The sisters are sassy characters, and the gameplay in the later levels gets pretty hair-raising, after a relatively gentile introduction to the gameplay.
The control system in Giana Sisters works well, using the left half of the screen as an invisible joystick, with jumping and firing activated by tapping the right-hand side.
Graphics in Giana Sisters are bright and colorful with a very Gameboy Advance feel to them. You can even switch to Retro mode and play Giana Sisters with its original graphics, although for some reason this didn't work in our tests on a HTC Sensation.
If you feel like a bit of old fashioned, wholesome platform gaming, Giana Sisters for Android is a real treat.
